Menurut asal mulanya tarian ini datangnya dari kerajaan pagaruyung yang diolah sedemikian rupa sehingga sudah menjadi milik rakyat bengkulu dan mempunyai ciri khas.
Tari bedhaya berasal dari. Tari bedhaya ketawang adalah tarian kebesaran yang hanya di pertunjukan ketika penobatan serta peringatan kenaikan tahta raja di kasunanan surakarta. Berasal dari manakah tari piringapa makna dan properti yang digunakan dalam tari piringtari piring adalah tarian rakyat bersifat akrobatik dari bengkulu. Tarian bedhaya sering kali merupakan hasil inspirasi raja mengenai suatu peristiwa tertentu yang disajikan dalam bentuk yang sangat stilistik.
Tujuan diciptakannya tarian ini untuk menyemangati 4 prajurit perang yang saat itu yang sedang berlatih. Perangkat gamelan yang digunakan untuk membawakan gending ketawang gedhe ini terdiri dari lima jenis. Nama tari bedhaya ketawang diambil dari kata bedhaya yang berarti penari wanita di istana dan ketawang yang berarti langit yang identik sesuatu yang tinggi.
Tari beksan wireng adalah tari yang berasal dari jawa tengah dan diciptakan oleh prabu amiluhur. Hal ini terlihat dengan gerakan gerakan para penari yang gagah perkasa sedang membawa tombak dan tameng. Tari bedhaya ketawang yang berasal dari keraton kasunanan surakarta hadiningrat solo jawa tengah ini diiringi musik tradisional jawa tengah berupa gamelan yang disebut dengan gending ketawang gedhe.
Istilah bedhaya ketawang berasal dari kata bedhaya yang berarti penari wanita dalam istana. Tarian ini merupakan tarian sakral yang suci bagi masyarakat dan kasunanan surakarta. Karena merupakan kebudayaan peninggalan kerajaan mataram di keraton ngayogyakarto hadiningrat juga bisa kita dapati tarian serupa yakni tari bedhaya semang.
Nama bedhaya ketawang sendiri berasal dari kata bedhaya yang berarti penari wanita di istana. Bedhaya ketawang adalah sebuah tarian kebesaran yang hanya dipertunjukkan ketika penobatan serta tingalandalem jumenengan sunan surakarta upacara peringatan kenaikan tahta raja. Penari bedaya berjumlah sembilan untuk bedaya yang berasal dari kasunanan surakarta dan kesultanan yogyakarta sementara untuk bedaya yang berasal dari kadipaten mangkunegaran dan pakualaman berjumlah tujuh.
