Seperti yang telah disampaikan sebelumnya tarian lengger lanang hanya dilakukan oleh laki laki namun mereka berpakaian dan berdandan sebagai perempuan.
Tari lengger berasal dari daerah. Tari lengger adalah salah satu tarian tradisional yang berasal dari jawa tengahtarian ini dimainkan oleh seorang laki laki dan seorang perempuan. Tari kretek adalah tarian yang berasal dari daerah kudus jawa tengah. Tari lengger ini merupakan pengembangan dari tarian sebelumnya yakni tari tayub.
Tari topeng lengger lengger artinya tledhek laki laki. Tarian ini merupakan pengembangan dari tarian sebelumnya yaitu tari tayubtari lengger juga merupakan salah satu tarian klasik yang sudah ada sejak jaman dahulu hingga sekarang. Kesenian lengger banyumasan ini diiringi oleh musik calung gamelan yang terbuat dari bambunama tarian ini pernah disebut dalam novel trilogi ronggeng dukuh paruk karya sastrawan ahmad tohari.
Tarian ini memberikan nasihat dan pesan kepada setiap orang untuk dapat bersikap mengajak dan membela kebenaran dan menyingkirkan kejelekan. Lengger atau disebut juga ronggeng adalah kesenian asli banyumas berupa tari tradisional yang dimainkan oleh 2 sampai 4 orang serupa wanita yang didandani dengan pakaian khas. Tak hanya lengger lanang tari ronggeng juga berasal dari tradisi yang sama.
Namun yang membedakannya adalah tari ronggeng hanya dilakukan oleh penari perempuan. Lengger berasal dari kata eling ngger. Kalebu tarian tradisional yang sudah sangat lama dikenal di tanah jawa tengah.
Tarian ini menggambarkan kehidupan para buruh bersama dengan kreteknya. Kudus sudah lama dikenal dengan industri kreteknya dan menjadi penopang perekonomian masyarakat setempat.
